Research Statement

My practice has always been devoted to translational research in Immunology.

  • I contributed to the discovery of HIV and then revealed its preferential tropism and cytopathic effect - the first indication that HIV causes AIDS - which I later explained by showing that CD4 is the prime HIV receptor
  • I developed the concept of suicide genes from preclinical studies to clinical trials
  • I developed a vaccine platform that is currently translated in a CMV vaccine
  • I investigated the role of Tregs in autoimmune diseases, maternal-fetal tolerance and cancer, and conceived Treg-based therapeutic approaches, notably using low-dose IL2
  • I introduced Systems Immunology approach in these translational efforts

My current efforts are now in translational systems immunology, with a main focus on Tregs and their TCRs. My 3 (overambitious) main goals are:

  • to contrast the role of Tregs in autoimmune diseases, cancer and maternal-fetal tolerance
  • to elucidate the TCR repertoire of Tregs in health and (some) diseases
  • to validate low-dose IL2 in (some) autoimmune diseases
